Metrovacesa is committed to ecology by creating a new sustainability department

Metrovacesa, a classic in the Spanish construction sector with more than 100 years of history, has decided to bet on sustainable urban development and citizen participation. After overcoming the crisis in the sector and restructuring its debt, it has returned to the market with a new action plan full of innovative initiatives.

This year, Metrovacesa, controlled by Banco Santander and BBVV, has decided to join the global trend of sustainability, creating a department specialized in Sustainable Urban Development. This department aims to promote participatory urbanism and ensure that sustainability is a key factor in the development of urban projects. According to a statement published on its website, the company is already applying this approach in seven projects located in big cities such as Madrid, Valencia, A Coruña and Barcelona.

"Cities are on the front line to face the great challenges of the future, such as decarbonization and adaptation to climate change," says the Metrovacesa report. "That is why we have involved more than 170 local entities in the design of our projects, with the aim of contributing to the creation of more active, healthy, inclusive and resilient cities, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda."

The new Metrovacesa department will form part of the company's Land area, which has the largest portfolio of land available on the Spanish market, with a total area of almost 5 million buildable square meters. In order to develop these projects, Metrovacesa proposes to intensify collaboration between the public, private and civil society sectors. To achieve this, the department plans to interact with the local community through design workshops, working groups, informative talks, open debates between experts and citizens, as well as partnerships with universities, research centers and urban innovation networks.
